The University of Wolverhampton, part of the West Midlands Combined Universities, is continuing to build on its commitment to providing employers with higher level skills by welcoming its first full cohort of Higher/Degree Apprentices to City Campus.
The Higher/Degree Apprentices attended an Introduction Day recently along with their employers for an overview of the facilities on offer and to learn more about studying while earning.
The 54 new Faculty of Science and Engineering students are studying Higher/Degree Apprenticeships in Chartered Surveying, Construction Management (Civil Engineering), Construction Management (Built Environment) and Healthcare Science Practitioner.
29 businesses including Shaylor Group, Interclass Plc, Turner and Townsend Limited, St Modwen Homes, Ridgeways Surveyors Limited, United Living, Tarmac, Speller Metcalfe, Mace Group, Vinci Construction and Telford and Wrekin Council are taking part in the new Higher/Degree Apprenticeship programmes.
Michele Roberts, Head of the Apprenticeship Hub at the University, said: “This is a significant landmark for the University and signals a real commitment by employers to upskill their staff. We’ve been working tirelessly with employers over the past few months to get to the point where we can start to deliver high quality Higher/Degree Apprenticeships and it’s wonderful to welcome so many new students to City Campus.”
Julie Shaw, Towler Shaw Roberts (TSR Surveyors), said: “We’re very excited about this new Degree Apprenticeship in Chartered Surveying. We were approached by a school leaver looking to do a Degree Apprenticeship and we were hugely impressed with the University’s approach to providing information about the programme. This is a great opportunity for young people who would rather earn and learn at the same time and it also ticks all the boxes for us as a business.”
Larissa Jones, a TSR Surveyors employee who has just completed her A Levels at college, said: “I thought it would be good to study for a Degree Apprenticeship with a good company rather than going to University to study full-time. That way I learn while I’m working, getting first-hand experience but still getting the chance to study for a higher qualification which hopefully will allow me to progress in my career as a Chartered Surveyor.”
